Life expectancy in our society is rising steadily. But what about health? The HLY (healthy life years) indicator can provide a clear picture of this. It indicates the average number of years a person can expect to live without major health problems from birth onwards. Furthermore, an increase in healthy life years would not only improve the situation of individuals but also result in lower levels of public health care expenditure. If healthy life years are increasing more rapidly than life expectancy, it means that people are living more years in better health. Higher density typically enhances environmental benefits, such as lowering urban heat, but excessive density in specific biomes can hinder biodiversity and increase vulnerability to storm destruction. Rising housing costs have been a hot topic in the media for some time now. But how have housing costs actually changed over the last few years? The statistics can provide the answer. We take a look at the percentage of the population living in a household where total housing costs (net of housing allowances) represent more than 40% of the total disposable household income (net of housing allowances). Although there has been an increase since 2019, when looking at the last 12 years (2014–2024), the proportion of the population facing excessive housing costs has actually fallen – both in the individual Centrope countries and compared to the EU average. The tranquillity and natural surroundings have a calming effect and promote well-being.
