Every September school is starting again after the summer holidays. Where is the most demand of primary schools in the Centrope region? To get an overview about that, we can use the percentage of 5 to 9 year old children in relation to the total population as approximated value. We can see a higher percentage of 5-to-9-year-old children along the Danube from around Bratislava to the West of Lower Austria as well as in and around the bigger cities in the Czech area, České Budějovice, Jihlava and Brno. The percentage of 5-to-9-year-old children is amaller in the North of Lower Austria and in the Burgenland/Hungary area. The map is available through our geoportal map.centropemap.org

On the occasion of International Youth Day, celebrated on 12 August, we are taking a look at the development of the youth ratio in Centrope's population, displayed as percentage of people aged 15 to 29 years. The chart shows an overall decrease during the last 10 years in all Centrope countries as well as in the EU-27 average – except the Czech Republic, where the youth ratio is rising again since a few years. The trend is generally pointing towards a flatter curve, which means that the decrease of youth population is slowing down. International Youth Day 2026, celebrated on 12 August, recognises that while young people’s lives are shaped by different national and local realities, their aspirations are remarkably similar. Across countries and communities, young people seek dignity, opportunity, meaningful participation, decent work, quality education, and a sustainable future. On this occasion we are taking a look on the development of the youth ratio of Centrope's population from 2014 to 2024. The maps show an overall decrease of the youth ratio, which is not only a sign of decreasing birth rates in the past, but also a result of the growing ratio of older population.

On the occasion of World Population Day, celebrated on 11 July, we are taking a look at the population development in the Centrope countries. The timeseries shows the development since 2016. Due to the differnt population size in each country, we indexed the numbers to 2016 = 100 for a better comparison. The chart shows different trends in each country: Whereas the overall population in Hungary and Slovakia is shrinking, there are increasing numbers in the Czech Republic and in Austria.
