The Centrope Region
The Centrope region comprises the districts and federal states along the shared borders of Austria, the Czech Republic, Hungary and Slovakia. It thus links landscapes and settlements that were separated for a long time by the Iron Curtain and now form a coherent European area.
CentropeMAP maps the region using the following areas: Burgenland, Lower Austria, Vienna, South Bohemia, South Moravia, Vysočina, Bratislava, Trnava, as well as Győr-Moson-Sopron and Vas.
Its location at the crossroads of four countries is unique in Europe. Vienna, Bratislava, Brno, Győr and other urban centres serve as important economic and cultural hubs. Spanning over 50,000 square kilometres and stretching along the rivers Danube, March, Waag and Raab, the region is characterised by a diverse mix of landscapes, settlements and historical developments. For many years, the population has enjoyed a high degree of cross-border mobility: commuting, day trips and social ties are part of everyday life. The region thus epitomises cooperation in practice.
From an economic perspective, the region acts as a bridge between established and growing Central European markets and boasts a well-educated workforce and an infrastructure that is constantly being expanded. This creates a wide range of opportunities for companies and businesses. Furthermore, the region has a high concentration of educational and research institutions.
The region’s natural landscapes offer a wealth of diverse recreational areas – from the Danube floodplains and the March-Thaya areas to the foothills of the Alps and the Carpathians, as well as Lake Neusiedl. The proximity of urban centres to unspoilt natural landscapes contributes significantly to the high quality of life in the region.
